It wasn’t always that the announcement and invitations of weddings are in the form of the wedding cards. Prior to the invention of the printing press in 1447, there was no way for these to be mass produce. Moreover, even if home-made wedding card is possible, many people of the Middle Ages were illiterate so they will be unable to read the invitation.
Further improvements were made during 1643 where Ludwig von Siegen created metal-plate engraving, which made invitations more beautiful and stylish. It was in the 19th century after 150 years following the invention of lithography by Alois Senefelder that the mass-production of wedding cards and invitations took off.
