Even after the invention of the printing press, hand written wedding cards were still preferred because of the problem of ink smudging, and the ink was simply stamped onto the paper and was not very appealing. To solve this problem, a piece of tissue paper is placed over the print, a technique that is still used today.
One advantage of printed invitations is their uniformity, each card will be almost exactly the same. For some couples this is very important as they want all stationery to match perfectly, especially for table stationery such as menus and place cards as they will be on the same table together.
