It wasn’t always that the announcement and invitations of weddings are in the form of the wedding cards. Prior to the invention of the printing press in 1447, there was no way for these to be mass produce. Moreover, even if home-made wedding card is possible, many people of the Middle Ages were illiterate so they will be unable to read the invitation.
It was also during this time when the people shifted to the postal system to send their invitations that the double envelope was used. The double envelope is the second envelope that contains the invitation. It was used to protect the envelope of the invitation, which also has ornaments attached to it.
